We're talking about something much more important...

Like most sewists, quilters, and crafters, Amy Jo Garner has accumulated an ample supply of fabric, notions, and other materials. And as someone who often acquires stashes of secondhand textiles and supplies, she has spent a lot of time thinking about the people who once owned the fabric, patterns, notions, and sewing machines that she ended up with.

Did they know that their families would abandon their treasured stash in a storage unit? Did they expect it to get dumped in a thrift store donation box? Did they realize that whoever had to empty their sewing room would put a large portion of the contents in a dumpster?

Amy Jo Garner is a sewist and fiber artist who found herself starting a small secondhand textiles resale business more than a year ago when she found that she was ending up with more textiles, patterns, and other sewing items than she could possibly use in her own art practice.

Amy stores these unwanted materials in her home, her studio, and in a climate-controlled storage facility, because the world is already overrun with textiles destined for the landfill or the incinerator.

Join us on Monday, March 11th, at 6:30 at the Northwest Library in OKC. Amy wants to start a conversation about how we - as creative people - can make a plan for what should happen to all of our cherished textiles, tools, notions, patterns, and machinery once we pass from this world.

Let's call it 'Crafty End-of-Life Planning.'
It's the meeting we've been waiting for all year... it's time to reveal those Round Robin quilt tops!

This year we had 4 groups of 5 who participated, resulting in an incredible 20 quilt tops!
And while my math skills are indeed awe-inspiring, they are nothing
compared to the awe we'll experience when these tops are revealed for
the very first time...

...but first, a few details to be aware of before Monday's meeting!

The
October meeting will begin a little early (did you catch that above?).
We are asking for members and guests to be in their seats by 6:25pm on
Monday so we can get right to it.

There won't be a business meeting or regular Show-and-Share that night. (The Show-and-Share support group can meet afterwards at Louie's).

The
order of the groups presenting will be selected at random that night so
that everyone can enjoy an equal amount of stress prior to the meeting.

Each
of the 4 groups will have 20 minutes to present their 5 quilt tops,
which includes time for light discussion about each member's
contribution and approach to the process for each quilt.

Wait...how does this work?
I'm glad you asked. See below...

The handy dandy 'Outline of a Group Reveal'

(Surprise!) The quilt top is revealed to the quilt owner (aka the person who made the center block) by the person who added the last round.

Once revealed to the quilt owner and oooohhhhhh and ahhhhhhhed by everyone you will then hang the quilt at the front of the room. Hangers will be provided for you to clip on.

Repeat above steps 5 times.

Once
all 5 quilt tops have been revealed, the group members will use the
remaining time to share their thoughts with the audience on how they
approached creating their center block and then how they went about
contributing to each quilt.

When
the group's presentation is complete the quilts will be re-hung along
the walls around the Carriage House, and we will move on to the next
group for their reveal.

Can I walk around and look at the quilts in detail?
Yes. But we ask that you please wait until all 4 groups have finished.
At the conclusion of all group presentations, guild members and guests
may wander around our impromptu quilt show at their leisure to look more
closely at the quilts and ask any questions they have to the makers.

The goal is for the meeting to be finished by 8:15pm, with everyone packed up and out the door by 8:25 or so.

See you on Monday the 9th!

OKC Modern Quilt Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09089578275880415935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7987242035944261965.post-64096371194621332952023-09-06T12:25:00.002-05:002023-09-06T12:25:13.861-05:00September 2023 Meeting
Monday, September 11th, 6:30 p.m.
Carriage House at Overholser Mansion
405 NW 15th St, Oklahoma City

Fold it, Snip it, Rip it, Drop it, Pass it, Repeat (x7)

Someone sent a video to Ann, she shared
it with the board, and we've got a brand new creative challenge for
everyone to participate in!

We demonstrated the <s>Stop, Drop, and Roll</s> Fold it, Snip it, Rip
it, Drop it, Pass it, Repeat (x7) challenge at the August guild meeting,
but if you were forced to miss it against your will or have had too
much wine since there, here's a video showing you how it works:
Fold it, Snip it, Rip it, Drop it, Pass it, Repeat (x7)

Action item:
Bring 1 yard of fabric that you love to the September meeting. You will be going home with 1/2 yard of this fabric, so make sure you really like it.

Guidelines:
Must be cotton quilting fabric. No batiks.

Bring a Christmas craft/project/ornament/gift idea to share

Grab your favorite Christmas
craft/project/ornament/gift/whatever idea to share with the guild, along
with instructions on how to make it.

Why?
So we can all 'oooh and ahhhh' and go away with several new ideas for our own Christmas projects and/or gifts to make this year.

How to I share the instructions?
Here are options for that:

Print off several copies on paper to pass out to the guild members at the meeting,

Print
off instructions on one piece of paper and bring to the meeting - Jen
will take it and compile it with the others to share with the group, or

Email the instructions to Jen at okcmqg [at] gmail [dot] com and she'll take care of it.

Threads and Needles
If you’ve ever said, “My machine doesn’t like this thread,” then you won’t want to miss August’s guild meeting.

Our guest speaker is Mary Fisher, an award-winning longarm quilter who
specializes in free motion and computerized quilting. She is a certified
Superior Threadologist who teaches free motion quilting to both
domestic and longarm quilters, and is also a former Handi Quilter
educator.

In this presentation Mary will be teaching all about thread, how it’s
made, and why you should choose different threads for different
applications. And chances are you’ll be able to use any thread in your
machine!
From the Beginning to Finding My Passion in Pixels: My Journey in Quilting
Dee's quilting journey began in 2006 when she made her very first quilt.

Join us on July 10th as Dee explains how to avoid the pitfalls of pixel
quilt design, specifically how she goes about choosing the images that
will give her the best result from this unique quilting process.

She will also present a trunk show of her most popular pixel quilts,
including the quilt requested by Queen Elizabeth, along with many other
quilts and projects she has created along the way.

We hope to see you there!

OKC Modern Quilt Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09089578275880415935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7987242035944261965.post-9057276472498404012023-06-01T14:15:00.004-05:002023-06-05T11:50:44.748-05:00June 2023 Meeting
Monday, June 12, 6:30 p.m.
Carriage House at Overholser Mansion
405 NW 15th St, Oklahoma City

Show Off Your Craft
There are so many reasons to show off your quilts in shows, festivals, and fairs.

It motivates you to complete your projects. It's also a great way to share a 'piece' of yourself with some of your fellow guild members!

Round Robin quilts are medallion-style quilts that are pieced from the center out. Each group member creates a center block that is then passed around to each of the other members to add a creative pieced border of their choosing.

Join us on Monday as we go deeper into the purpose and intent of a Round Robin quilt. Last year's groups will also take you through how they approached each round in order to continue the story from the previous round.

The 2023 OKC MQG Round Robin

This is it... the moment we've all been waiting for... you can signup now for the 2023 Round Robin!

Got questions? because in many ways the definition of a modern quilter is as individual
and unique as the actual quilter.

Modern quilting is a relatively new movement that has flexibility and innovation at its heart.

It is also about the attitude and the approach that modern
quilters take. It respects the amazing artistry and talent of the
tradition of quilting, while at the same time allowing the individual
quilter to challenge the 'rules.'

At this month's meeting we'll be talking about the design elements that serve as a guideline when asking "What makes this quilt modern?"

The good news? It's not a rigid formula - in fact, many quilts may have
only one element that deems it 'modern.' Instead, the concept of modern
quilting is intended to reflect the individual personality and personal
style of the quilter.

tl;dr If there were one 'rule' in modern quilting, it would be that there are no rules.

Are you sad you didn't attend QuiltCon?

Same.

Fortunately for us, however, we get to re-live the entire experience vicariously through Lela and Shankari!

Join us next Monday as Lela O'Dell and Shankari Paradee present their recap of everything QuiltCon 2023.

And then mark your calendars for February 22-25, 2024, for QuiltCon 2024 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Because FOMO is real...
OKC Modern Quilt Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09089578275880415935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7987242035944261965.post-82249477230952347052023-01-25T10:56:00.000-06:002023-01-25T10:56:29.544-06:00February 2023 Meeting
The February Guild meeting will be Monday, February 13th, at 6:30pm at the Carriage House at the Overholser Mansion in OKC.

This month we will be shining the spotlight on 3 of our incredible members - Vicki Medlin, Ronna Harris, and Shankari Paradee - and we can't wait to see and hear their stories.

Whether you're a seasoned member or a first time guest, we hope you will join us!

Note: Current members be sure to renew your membership before the end of February!
