Flaunt Your Finish: June 2015

Reminder for OKCMQG members:
NO JULY MEETING! Enjoy your Summer!

Welcome Summer!

The rain has finally stopped here in Oklahoma and Summer is in full swing. What do you think about making quilts during the Summer months? Is it just too dang hot? Or is Summer the time to tackle a new project? We have quilt and non-quilt finishes to show you this month. Maybe you'll get an idea for your own Summer project!

Link up YOUR OWN JUNE FINISH at the end of this post and share our button on your blog!

The BAGS!

SHIRLENE made this Sew Together Bag during a class at Oklahoma Quiltworks taught by fellow guild member, Melissa. This Mosaic line by Windham Fabrics makes that best looking bag projects. Metal zippers are a must to amp up the bag.

LAURA had made this little sling bag several times because it's the perfect size for her.  She was enthralled with this retro bark cloth at QuiltCon and thought it was a great way to use it. We agree!

ANN  finished the “3-in-1 Betsy Bag” by Betsy LaHonta. The body fabric is Tokyo Train Ride (Sarah Watts and Cotton + Steel) and the lining is Alison Glass Handcrafted. It was a fun construction and a well-written pattern. The bag is currently on display at Oklahoma Quiltworks. Pattern and Kraft-Tex also available there.

The QUILTS!

This little zen bowl pad is made of indigo dyed fabric that AGNES made as a class sample for her Indigo Workshop at Oklahoma Quiltworks. I Love how the hand dyed fabric works with KF shot cottons, I might need to explore this further!

CHANDA made this quilt for a teacher she work's with who is having a baby boy in the fall.

CATHY finished this Luvaduv baby quilt tricked out with hearts from "Charmed I'm Sure" by Lesley Chaisson for her cousin's grand baby.  She decided it was going to be too big so she made the diagonal border smaller and appliqued it around the center heart with a decorative heart stitch.  The quilting motif around the center heart is Lazy Hearts from Pam Clarke's class she took at the OKC Winter Quilt Show.

Cathy personalized the label with the baby's birth stats and a picture.

ANN made this T-Shirt quilt and gave it to its new owner after he graduated the USAF Academy earlier this month. Anyone who knows me well is aware I lamented getting it started. I felt downright tortured about it. Enter my miracle guardian angel, OKCMQG member Ellen Maxwell (Journey Quilt Company). She helped me with the layout and once I was over that hump, it came together quickly. Ellen then quilted the finished piece for me. The gift was a big hit. And even though I survived the experience, I leave T-Shirt quilts to the professionals like Ellen!

And our favorite Hazel the Hedgehog makes another appearance, courtesy of MELISSA. Always a favorite pattern.

Things that are STUFFED!

ANN made theses elephants as a baby shower gift for (guild member) Becky's upcoming grandson. The nursery theme is elephants and the fabric (Reel Time), by Brigitte Heitland, complements the king size Comma Chevrons quilt Becky made for her son and his wife last year. Henry & Helga Plushies pattern is FREE and you can get it HERE.

Earlier this year ANN approached a friend who’d lost her dad suddenly and asked if she had any shirts of her dad’s she’d like made into pillows. She gave Ann two - one for her and one for her younger sister - and Ann turned them into pillows. The stars are for that friend’s sons—an infant and a toddler.

But wait!  There's more...Quilts for our ongoing CHARITY PROJECT for Anna's House:

MELISSA improvised this quilt that she is donating.  Fabrics are yarn dyed Essex in black and various Michael Miller solids.

AGNES completed this happy little summer quilt - made with scraps and Waverly fabric. Equilateral triangles are so much fun!

ANN made these last two quilts from some of the fabric generously donated by members in 2014. One for a fan of pinks, another for a fan of Pixar and Transformers!

Now it's YOUR TURN! We want to see what projects you completed in the month of June. Link up your blog or Flickr page below.

Thanks for joining us!

June Social

* * * Important announcements at the end of the post! * * *

Thanks to all who participated in our June Social! We especially want to give a huge THANK YOU to Debbie and Toni of Oklahoma Quiltworks for allowing us to have our social at the shop. Our own private party in a quilt shop. What could be better! We had a great turnout and a wonderful time!

It was so fun to see our buntings hanging on the tables laden with food in the back room.

We chatted up a storm and brought appetizers and treats to share.

Several demos were set up in the front of the shop, such as:

How to cut a binding on the bias with this nifty ruler; and

Paper piecing with this Fabric Folding Pen filled with Mary Ellen's Best Press.

Turn and press, turn and press...

There were a couple other demos, but I was distracted by this cute fabric that you color yourself and the fact that the shop was open for business. I didn't buy, but I have some new ideas taking shape.

We also had our Road to Oklahoma Quilt Block Lottery and here's how that went down. Bob was the big winner, but since he is in the process of making his own Road to Oklahoma quilt, he put the blocks back into the kitty. (Thanks Bob!) There were so many that we divided them up and drew two winners: Congratulations Karen and Kristine! It's extra special that Kristine won half the blocks because she and her family will be moving very soon. Kristine was one of the first members back when there was less than a dozen, and while we'll certainly miss her, we are excited for Kristine and her family as they make their new home in Arizona.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  1. SEW DAY is this Saturday, June 13th @ Newchurch, 10 am-3 pm.
  2. NO MEETING IN JULY - that means you have a whole extra month until the next Show & Share!
