Member Spotlight
The February Guild meeting will be Monday, February 12th, at 6:30pm at the Carriage House at the Overholser Mansion in OKC.

This month we will be shining the spotlight on 3 of our incredible members - Jacob Patrick, Dorinda Gouw, and Jen Basford. We can't wait to see and hear all about their quilting journeys!

A Good Old Fashioned Modern Bed Turning
Bring your favoritest (that should really be a word) quilt you made/finished in 2023 (or whenever, we won't know the difference) to show everyone. Be prepared for lots of "Ooooohhh!!!"s and "Ahhhhhhh!!!"s...

Reflect. Reward. Refocus.
After our bed has been thoroughly stripped we'll reflect on what 2023 meant for us and how we want to focus our intentions in 2024.

Spoiler alert: It'll likely involve a lot of quilting...

Christmas is a Claus for Celebration

Join us on Monday, December 11th, as we celebrate the season with our quilty friends!

tl;dr 

• Ho-Ho-Holiday Ornament Exchange: Bring a handmade ornament to exchange or Yule be sorry...
• Eat, Drink, and Be Merry: Bring a sweet or savory finger food treat to share with all. #yummy
• But wait, there's Myrrh: Committee signups, Show-and-Share, and brand new door prizes to name a few!

There's snow time like the present (handmade, that is)
Bring a handmade ornament (or other festive item) for our annual Ornament Exchange.

Sleigh what?! How does that work?
You bring one, you get one. It's that simple.

Deck the Crockpots
It's a good old fashioned holiday potluck party! 

• You provide the food: Bring a sweet or savory dish to share.
• We do the rest: The Board will provide plates, napkins, utensils, cups, and delicious Christmas Spirits (both alcoholic and non-alcohlic).

Note: Stretchy pants not included.

Exploring the Art and Activism of Queer Quilting

Join us on Monday, November 13th, as our very own Chantry Sipress-Banks takes us on a journey to explore the art and activism of queer quilting.

Who is this 'Chantry' person?
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past several years - or those who are absolutely brand new to our wonderful little community - Chantry is one of the movers and shakers in our guild.

A former past president of the OKC Modern Quilt Guild, Chantry is currently the Executive Director of Preservation Oklahoma, the state's only private, nonprofit membership organization that is dedicated to promoting, supporting, and coordinating historic preservation activities throughout the state.

We're looking forward to hearing from Chantry on the 13th - and we'll see you all there!

October 2023 Meeting

Round Robin Reveal

It's the meeting we've been waiting for all year... it's time to reveal those Round Robin quilt tops!

This year we had 4 groups of 5 who participated, resulting in an incredible 20 quilt tops! And while my math skills are indeed awe-inspiring, they are nothing compared to the awe we'll experience when these tops are revealed for the very first time...

...but first, a few details to be aware of before Monday's meeting!

• The October meeting will begin a little early (did you catch that above?). We are asking for members and guests to be in their seats by 6:25pm on Monday so we can get right to it. 
• There won't be a business meeting or regular Show-and-Share that night. (The Show-and-Share support group can meet afterwards at Louie's).
• The order of the groups presenting will be selected at random that night so that everyone can enjoy an equal amount of stress prior to the meeting.
• Each of the 4 groups will have 20 minutes to present their 5 quilt tops, which includes time for light discussion about each member's contribution and approach to the process for each quilt.

Wait...how does this work?
I'm glad you asked. See below...

The handy dandy 'Outline of a Group Reveal'

• (Surprise!) The quilt top is revealed to the quilt owner (aka the person who made the center block) by the person who added the last round.
• Once revealed to the quilt owner and oooohhhhhh and ahhhhhhhed by everyone you will then hang the quilt at the front of the room. Hangers will be provided for you to clip on.
• Repeat above steps 5 times.
• Once all 5 quilt tops have been revealed, the group members will use the remaining time to share their thoughts with the audience on how they approached creating their center block and then how they went about contributing to each quilt.
• When the group's presentation is complete the quilts will be re-hung along the walls around the Carriage House, and we will move on to the next group for their reveal.

Can I walk around and look at the quilts in detail?
Yes. But we ask that you please wait until all 4 groups have finished. At the conclusion of all group presentations, guild members and guests may wander around our impromptu quilt show at their leisure to look more closely at the quilts and ask any questions they have to the makers.

The goal is for the meeting to be finished by 8:15pm, with everyone packed up and out the door by 8:25 or so.

September 2023 Meeting

Fold it, Snip it, Rip it, Drop it, Pass it, Repeat (x7)

Someone sent a video to Ann, she shared it with the board, and we've got a brand new creative challenge for everyone to participate in!

We demonstrated the Stop, Drop, and Roll Fold it, Snip it, Rip it, Drop it, Pass it, Repeat (x7) challenge at the August guild meeting, but if you were forced to miss it against your will or have had too much wine since there, here's a video showing you how it works:

Action item:
Bring 1 yard of fabric that you love to the September meeting. You will be going home with 1/2 yard of this fabric, so make sure you really like it.

Guidelines:
Must be cotton quilting fabric. No batiks.
 

Bring a Christmas craft/project/ornament/gift idea to share

Grab your favorite Christmas craft/project/ornament/gift/whatever idea to share with the guild, along with instructions on how to make it.

Why?
So we can all 'oooh and ahhhh' and go away with several new ideas for our own Christmas projects and/or gifts to make this year.

How to I share the instructions?
Here are options for that:

• Print off several copies on paper to pass out to the guild members at the meeting,
• Print off instructions on one piece of paper and bring to the meeting - Jen will take it and compile it with the others to share with the group, or
• Email the instructions to Jen at okcmqg [at] gmail [dot] com and she'll take care of it.

We'll see you at the September meeting this Monday!

Guest Speaker: Mary Fisher

Threads and Needles
If you’ve ever said, “My machine doesn’t like this thread,” then you won’t want to miss August’s guild meeting.

Our guest speaker is Mary Fisher, an award-winning longarm quilter who specializes in free motion and computerized quilting. She is a certified Superior Threadologist who teaches free motion quilting to both domestic and longarm quilters, and is also a former Handi Quilter educator.

In this presentation Mary will be teaching all about thread, how it’s made, and why you should choose different threads for different applications. And chances are you’ll be able to use any thread in your machine!
