Oklahoma Tornado Relief - Moore Love

Thank you to everyone who has offered their help and have been so patient with us as we try to devise a plan.  Many wonderful ideas were sent to us, our guild members had many fabulous thoughts, and we discussed them all at our meeting last night.

We know you want something tangible to go to the victims of these horrific tornadoes.  We have had many offers of completed quilts, and due to limited man power on our end, we have decided to ask everyone to send completed quilts to our guild rather than blocks.  It could be a quilt you have waiting for a good home, a new one you want to make special just for someone in need, it can be modern, traditional, any size, any colors, made by an individual or a group.  You send us your completed quilts and we will get them to those in need.

Quilts will be due to the OKC Modern Quilt Guild by June 30th.  If you e-mail us at okcmqg@gmail.com we will get an address to you.

Our guild will also be creating two quilts to raise money for two charities in the form of a drawing, as money is a big need for that area right now.  That post should go up about mid June so please stay on the lookout for that one!

Thank you for your outpouring of support, love, positive thoughts, prayers... and quilts!

    1. If you are on Flickr there is a group, Quilting for a Cause, where you might be able to find someone to help you out. There are great people in that group and i'm sure if you post a new thread someone will help you out.

  4. I have yet to finish making a quilt (ever!) but I did recently WIN a lap sized quilt and while it's lovely I was left wondering "what will I do with it?".

NOW, I know. I'm emailing you now for shipping information.

    1. I want to add that when the Waldo Canyon Fire burned 364 homes in Colorado Springs last June, our area received a lot of donations from the people of Oklahoma. We should all help as much as possible, even small donations make a difference...you never know when you might be on the receiving end!

    2. Dana,

Thank you for your interest in aiding those in need. It seems as though your settings for blogger are currently set at "no-reply" so we are not able to reply to you via e-mail. If you will please e-mail us at okcmqg@gmail.com We will be able to an address for the quilt you have. Unfortunately, at this time we are not accepting monetary donations. However, we will be holding a drawing in mid-June with all proceeds going towards local charitable organizations helping the victims. So, stay tuned for further details on that.

      Best,

  6. Thanks to the OCMQG for putting this info out! I was listening to NPR this morning and one of the biggest "problems" they have right now (as after all major catastrophes like this) is to accept, catalog, store and properly distribute all the good-intentioned gifts. They are having this problem now in OK. The person was saying that although we might think there is a great need for clothes right now, the affected people aren't asking for clothes right now, as they have no home to store them in. I'm sure the finished quilts will be a very welcome gift but when the time is right. I would trust our OK friends to know when that is.

      Excellent thought, Miss A.!

Until this email thread started, I was planning to contact the Red Cross for suggestions re: contributions from our Seattle MQG but you're right, the OKC guild will know best. I will defer to their wishes for all contributions...

  7. I have a couple of baby quilts that I was working on. I will get them quilted and get them to you. I just had an idea! I could make a pillowcase to match and put quilt inside. I know we all have "scraps" lying around and could put them to good use that way. God Bless You for your efforts.

  8. I am not a quilter, but I do sew. I know there are more important items needed right now. But, I do have an almost new Janome 8077 sewing machine that I would like to give to someone who is a quilter or a seamstress. I live in Iowa, but would gladly send it. So please keep this in mind. 1. Anonymous,
I am a quilter on a budget. I have a few quilts I would love to quilt and bind but my 20 year old singer just isn't cutting it for that anymore. I love to sew and sew for a cause on etsy. I would love to quilt and bind a few tops I have and would donate them if somehow I could even borrow your janome. I live in Indiana though. Any ideas?

  9. I am desperate to know if there is a site for lost quilts found after the May 20 tornadoes? My Granddaughter lost everything in the Tri City(Newcastle) tornadoes including treasure quilts made for her by her Great Grandma. I am trying to find all 'lost item sites'.

    1. Quilter's Cache usually has a page for missing quilts. If you have a photo of it try posting it there and if it shows up somewhere hopefully they can help make the connection to get it back to her. So sorry for their loss.

  13. Our guild only meets once a month, therefore, we wouldn't be able to make quilts by the end of June. However, we can collect blocks during June and July and August, then get them to you sometime in the fall for cold weather. Would this work for you also. Please advise..Sue Goecker

  17. I recently sent you a few toddler and infant quilts. How is the response to your call for quilts? I could send a few more if there is still a need.

    1. Hi! Our response has been overwhelmingly positive. Boxes upon boxes showing up daily. So while I would hate to turn down any quilts, I would say that since you already sent a box you should go ahead and save the latest ones you have. Thanks for checking with us, and thank you for what you've already donated!

  19. Have you thought about having people send quilt squares? The Boston Modern Quilt Guild did that for victims of the marathon bombing and it has been a huge success ...

  20. Do you have any idea how many quilts you have received now and how and when they will be distributed?
We sent 7 lap quilts to Oklahoma Quiltworks about 3 weeks ago and have about 3 more lap size and a baby quilt completed. Wondering whether to take them to OKC or wait until the next Oklahoma need arises.
Are any of these quilts going into Shawnee, Carney, El Reno, Union City etc?

    1. I am unsure of the exact number of quilts at this time, but it is somewhere around 300 I would guess. They are being distributed as we receive them through a variety of channels, including Metro First Realty, a company who is donating their time and talent helping families to find temporary living situations at a discounted rate or shorter contract renewal term.

Quilts are going to any person effected by a tornado in the month of May who finds themselves in need.

  21. I have emailed Jean Scott but haven't received a reply. I need to make contact with her about some quilts we donated that may not be the right kind of quilts.
She wanted a contact person for the Happy Scrappers (I am)in reference to thank you note, but the local quilt shop mentioned something about the quilts so I am thinking some were not what they wanted. We are making more today so I need some information before finishing these. Please have someone (Jean should have my email I sent her) contact me, thanks.
